What Does the Welcome Channel on Discord Do?
A welcome channel is, as the title would suggest, a channel in a discord server used to welcome new members into your community. Using a bot or Discord’s default welcome message settings, you are able to easily have a set or random message be sent every time someone new joins your server.
Having a welcome channel is not only good for keeping track of who has joined your server, the channel we are going to be setting up today is proven to increase interactions in your server.
How to Create a Welcome Channel on Discord
-
Step 1
First, you’ll need to select the server you are creating a welcome channel for. Then right-click on the channel list and select create a new channel.
-
Step 2
Create a text channel and call it ‘welcome’, or in this case ‘introductions’, then click create a channel.
-
Step 3
Now you will need to set up your welcome message to post every time someone new joins the server. Click the drop-down arrow at the top of your server and select server settings.
-
Step 4
Select overview and find the system message section. Select your introductions channel you just made and toggle on ‘send a random welcome message when someone joins your server.’
Now you’re essentially done! Well, with a basic welcome channel.
Setting a custom welcome message in Discord
If you are looking to boost interactions in your server, I would suggest swapping out steps 3 and 4 and instead of using a bot such as MEE6 to post a custom message instead. In the custom message you are able to; recommend channels to new members, suggest roles which new members can pick up, and instruct newcomers to start a conversation.
To turn on MEE6’s welcome message, in the side panel under server management select ‘Welcome’ then fill out your message on the right. Don’t forget to select your introductions channel before you hit save.
What to Put on Your Welcome Channel
Your welcome channel should have a message posted every time someone goes live. You should also think about encouraging new members to introduce themself in your welcome channel and even have yourself and community members welcome newcomers too.
In the screenshot below, you can see an example of a welcome message posted on my personal server. In this message, I have included one crucial ingredient to boosting interactions in your server… The phrase “Tell us a little about yourself!”
This gives new members a reason to start communicating as soon as they have joined, also it gives an opportunity for them to connect with old members who are already active on the server.
If you are not using a bot to welcome new users, simply ping new users individually, personally welcome them yourself and ask them about themselves (though if you have a bigger server with frequent newcomers, I would recommend using a bot to do this for you).
Lastly, add a channel topic for your welcome channel. To do this, simply right-click your channel then click edit and fill in the channel topic box there. Your channel topic doesn’t need to be anything fancy, the chances are this won’t be seen by many anyway. Adding a simple question in your channel topic, such as “what are your hobbies and interests?” is always a good conversation starter!
