What Does it Mean to Nuke a Discord Server?

Nuking a discord server is basically nothing more than destroying everything in these discord servers, often done by raiders, but also possible to be done by server owners. This means it will delete roles, delete channels, delete all the messages and ban or kick users, this will make it impossible for users with modded discord clients to recover the messages. Sometimes when a discord server gets nuked it will also spam a specific message and alert people through the ping function, this can only be done if the user who is nuking servers has written that into the code of the bot they’re using.

Often when nuking isn’t done by the owner themselves, but by someone else. It’s sometimes done in combination with raiding by members with malicious intentions and it can be considered a cyber attack. What will happen with a raid like this is that the user in control and therefore access to administrator commands, will delete all channels, make new channels, send messages in the new channels, and if they are really out to destroy discord servers, they will ban all users in the servers they attack.

There are 2 ways to nuke a discord server. However, one of the ways would be against Discord their ToS, because of how it’s executed.

1. Option 1

   The first option is that you will have to be an admin or the server owner on the discord server you want to nuke. As an admin, you will have the permissions to actually have the permissions needed to nuke channels. However, if it’s not your server and you’re not the admin on this server, you’ll somehow need to get the admin position, which is not something that any server owner will just randomly do.

   I also do not recommend nuking your server, unless you want to completely redo it and this would be the easier way to do so, because of the hard work that goes into designing servers. Also, you will have to think of all the people aka the users that will be caught in this too.

2. Option 2

   The second option to nuke discord servers is actually against Discord their ToS. This way would be with the use of a nuke bot. However, considering these nuke bots often have commands where you can spam discord servers, these are against the terms of service. This is because automatic spamming of servers and therefore the client of discord is not allowed.

Stopping your discord from getting nuked is fairly easily combatted, make sure you have 2FA (2-factor authentication) put on your account, and make sure to use a strong password, so no one can just hack your account.

Then secondly make sure that everyone you give administrator powers, are people you trust. If you don’t trust anyone then don’t make roles that have the “Administrator”, “Manage Channels” or “Ban users” permission. This way you minimize the risk of someone nuking your server.

Thirdly there are also some settings that you can turn on in your discord server to stop your discord server from getting nuked. There is also a bot that can help you and prevent your server from being raided and nuked by users with malicious intentions.

The settings you can change to help with prevention are the following, most of these can be found under moderation or security settings in your server settings, and some can be found in your profile settings:

• Verification level
  Depending on the size of your server, you might need to put it higher to get extra security.
• Explicit media content filter
  Put this filter on “scan media content from all members”.
• 2FA
  With this setting, everyone who has moderation powers will have to turn on 2-factor authentication or they won’t be able to take any moderation actions.
• Bots
  Make sure to only add bots that you trust, so don’t just add any bot that your friends send to you. Always make sure to check the bot before adding it. However, there is also a discord bot or two that can actually help you prevent a raid or a nuke from happening. Once again, do make sure to check if the bot in question is trusted and safe to use.
• Close DM’s
  This is optional, but if you want to make sure you won’t be able to click on suspicious links, then you can also close your dm’s in your profile settings under privacy & safety.

Depending on how you nuke discord servers, it might be against ToS or not. If the nuking gets done by just using the administrator or server owner’s permission, then it’s not against ToS. As the owner has voluntarily given the user the permissions to carry out these actions.
