In this article, I’ll discuss the steps on how you can delete your account, as well as other stuff you might find useful.
Before Deleting Your Discord Account
First things first.
If you own a server or two, you might want to make sure what will happen to them upon deleting your account on the Discord app. You can’t proceed with the account deletion if Discord doesn’t know what it’s going to do with them.
You have two choices in this regard: either you transfer ownership of the server or delete it altogether.
Transfer Ownership of your Discord Server
Transferring ownership of a Discord server is necessary, especially if the community is quite large and you have trustworthy admins or members you can hand it over to. It will leave your members upset and confused if you delete the server without warning, so it’s better to let them know first. In most cases, the better alternative compared to just throwing it into oblivion is to let someone dependable take care of it.
Here’s how you can transfer ownership of a Discord server:
Launch the Discord app on your computer, and log in to your account if you haven’t done so already.
Go to Server Settings. You can do this by clicking on the server name and selecting Server Settings on the menu.
Alternatively, you can right-click on your server icon and choose Server Settings.
Under User Management, choose Members.
Select a member, admin, or mod you want to take over as a new owner of the server.
Hover over their name until you can find the icon with three vertical white dots. Click it.
Select Transfer Ownership on the dropdown menu.
Discord will ask you to confirm transferring the ownership of the server to another member. After acknowledging the changes, click Transfer Ownership.
Your server is now owned by someone else. After this, the crown icon will no longer appear beside your name, meaning that you’re now a regular member of the server. Depending on your server set-up, you may still retain other roles, such as being the mod and admin.
Permanently delete server
If your server has been inactive for a long time, you can also consider deleting it. To delete a server, follow these steps:
Go to Server Settings. Refer to the instructions above if you’re unsure where to find it.
At the bottom of the left sidebar, find the Delete Server button and click it.
Enter the name of your server to confirm, and then click Delete Server.
Your server is now permanently deleted. Discord may ask you to provide feedback and state your reason why you deleted your server. You can choose whichever option suits you.
How to Delete a Discord Account on Desktop Computer
Now that your servers have been taken care of, it’s time to delete your Discord account. You can both do this on the desktop and mobile versions.
Here are the steps for the desktop version to permanently delete your Discord account.
Launch Discord and log in to your account.
Go to User Settings.
You can find User Settings beside your username and next to the Mute and Deafen buttons. It’s represented by a gear or cog icon.
Select the My Account tab.
Scroll down and find Account Removal.
Here, you have two options: to Disable the Account or to Delete it entirely.
Disabling your Discord Account means you will be on an indefinite hiatus. You won’t be able to receive notifications and such, but others can still send you friend requests.
On the other hand, deleting your Discord account will permanently remove it. You won’t be able to access it anymore, and other members can’t reach you through this account. The messages you’ve sent and the images you shared are still available for others to view. However, your name and profile will be gone. In its place will be deleteduser#0000, or something similar.
If you’re sure about deleting your account, click Delete Account. If you still want to give it some thought, you can disable it for a while.
Discord will ask you to type in your account password to confirm the changes.
How to Delete a Discord Account on Mobile Device
You can also delete a Discord account using your phone. To delete your Discord account on your phone or mobile device, follow these steps:
Launch the Discord app on your iOS or Android device.
Click your profile icon at the bottom right corner.
Under User Settings, choose My Account.
Scroll down to find Account Management. Here, you can choose to Disable your account or Delete it altogether.
As I’ve mentioned in the previous section, choose Disable if you only want to go on a hiatus. However, if you want to permanently remove your account, then choose Delete.
Discord will ask you to type in your password to confirm your request.
In most cases, your account will be scheduled for deletion after doing the above steps.
However, some users reported they had been redirected to another page, which was usually a step-by-step guide from Discord on how to delete an account.
If this happens to you, the best thing you can do is to contact Discor by going to their support page and sending them a message. This is the only other way you can permanently make your account disappear using your phone.
Remember that if you’ve enabled two-factor authorization (2FA), you may need to enter another code to confirm your account deletion.
Still, finding a desktop instead where you can delete your account on the Discord web version of the app might be quicker. You don’t need to install the client if you’re using another person’s computer and your only objective is to delete your Discord account. You can also try accessing the web version by clicking this link.
Restoring Your Discord Account
Not sure if you’ve made the right choice to delete our Discord account? Remember that once your account is deleted, it will be gone permanently after 14 days unless you recover it within the specified time period.
To recover your account, simply log in again to your Discord account. You will receive a prompt from Discord that your account is due to be deleted soon. You can prevent this by selecting the “Restore account” option, which you can find at the bottom.
As you probably already know, some of your data might still be available on Discord. If you wish to permanently delete it along with your account, you can send a message to Discord’s support team. Go to support.discord.com, and then click Submit a Request. Follow the on-screen instructions and fill in the necessary details.
You can also try this method if you’ve got an account you wish to delete but no longer have access to it. If you have lost your email or forgot your password, contacting Discord support is the way to go.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Happens When You Delete a Discord Account?
Deleting your Discord account will also remove your name and profile on Discord. You will no longer be able to log in to your account. However, some of your data will remain, such as messages sent to other users or on Discord servers. Meanwhile, your name will be changed to deleteduser#0000 (or something similar). Your messages and/or data will appear under this name by the same logic.
Discord had done this so the flow of the messages would not be interrupted, even if the user isn’t available anymore. Others can still make sense of the conversation, though your name will no longer appear.
Can You Get an Old Discord Account Back?
Yes. However, you must recover it within 14 days after you scheduled the account for deletion. Beyond the 14 days, you can no longer access it. There’s a chance that Discord will help you recover it if you send them a message on their support page. But still, the most you can do is to create a new account and start all over.
Can You Delete an Account If You No Longer Have Access to It?
There’s still a way for you to recover your Discord account even if you don’t have access to it. You must submit a request to the Discord support team to do this. Prepare any proof showing you’re the owner of that account, such as screenshots.
