By the end of this article, you’ll learn the basics of making code blocks and colorful text messages. Once you master this skill and use it on every server you belong to, many people will ask you how you did it, and you may not want to write messages in plain text ever again.
Making your Discord text colored is fairly easy to do. Follow the steps in this article and you’ll be ready to go.
How to Code Block
Let’s start with the basics of text formatting and code block highlighting.
Text formatting in apps usually shows the rich text format where you achieve the text you visualize by clicking some buttons or icons, like bold text, underline text, italicized text, and more. The best example of this is when you type in word processors like Microsoft Word.
However, Discord text formatting does not have that option because it uses a programming language. Therefore, we need to work around Discord’s syntax highlighting profile to format text in Discord.
This means that to color your text, you need to use Discord’s coding features and the markup language. As you read through the article, you’ll learn that the text color you want greatly depends on the specific syntax highlighting profile. Without the referenced syntax highlighting languages, your message will only appear as plain text.
With that said, the basics of coding and text formatting in Discord are fairly easy to learn. When you get the hang of making code blocks with syntax highlighting language, you can quickly use it to produce the colored text you want. Here are some basic steps of code blocking you need to learn:
Create a code block
The foundation of all colored text in Discord are multiple line code blocks. But before you go to making multiple code blocks, you should learn first how to make a single line code block. From there, you can incorporate other tips here and make multiple code blocks. To start creating a single-line code block, use the “backquote“, “tick” or “backtick” symbol or grave accent (`). In international keyboard layouts, this refers to the symbol located below the Escape key and above the Tab key in the upper left corner of the keyboard.
To create single-line code blocks, just type a single backquote symbol before and after your text message. You can type or copy this example and try it out in a chat box:
`This is how to create a single-line code block.`
It should then appear like this if you send it:
Entering multiple lines in your message
Coding to make colored text will require you to make three lines of text. To practice this, you can try typing a message, then to enter to a new line, hold the SHIFT key while pressing ENTER. Type another message and try the same gesture again. It should look like this:
To code block, we combine that with the first step of entering three backquote symbols. You now have multiline code blocks which should look like this:
“`This is the 1st line
This is the second line
And this is the third line“`
After trying the same basic technique a few times, you can try adding some color. This is where syntax highlighting language comes in and where displaying code blocks in colors becomes fun. You can even make multiple line code blocks that have different colors. Generally, the markdown codes begin with the syntax highlighting language, followed by a symbol, then your message, and then ending with three backquote symbols. Most code block patterns are like this:
“`syntax highlighting language
(symbol)Message
“`
How to Write in Red Text on Discord
To make your text look red on Discord, follow these steps:
-
Step 1
In the first line, use the diff syntax highlighting code. You should type “`diff then enter a new line.
-
Step 2
Type dash (-) followed by the message you want to color red.
-
Step 3
Enter a new line, then type “`. Your chat box should look like this:
“`diff
-Red text message
“`
How to Write in Orange Text on Discord
If you like the color orange, you need to use the css syntax. Take note however that using css syntax requires you to put your message inside the brackets. If your text is outside that, it will not appear as orange text.
-
Step 1
Type “`css in the first line.
-
Step 2
Enter a new line and type your message inside a pair of brackets ([your message here]).
-
Step 3
Enter another line and type “`. Your chat box and sent message should look like this:
How to Write in Yellow Text on Discord
Using the fix syntax language, you can make your colors stand out more, especially with Discord’s solarized dark theme and yellow text. Here’s how to do it:
-
Step 1
Type “`fix in the first line.
-
Step 2
In the second line, write the message you want to make yellow. Unlike the previous two colors, there’s no need to include any symbol here. So even if your third line is another text message, it will still be yellow.
-
Step 3
To close your message, enter a new line and type “`. This is how your message should look like:
Another way to make your text in Discord yellow is to use the apache syntax. However, you can’t use spaces here. Instead, you need to use the underscore sign to connect words and create a readable sentence.
If you want to try this, here are the steps:
-
Step 1
Type “`apache in the first line.
-
Step 2
Enter a new line then type a percentage sign and a right curly brace. Write your message after the right curly brace, and end it with a left curly brace. For illustration, the code should be: %{your_message_here}
-
Step 3
Enter a new line and type “` to end the code block.
How to Write in Dark Green Text on Discord
If green is your favorite color, you will love learning how to make your Discord as you have two options: dark green and light green. For dark green text, you will use the bash or json syntax and some quotation marks.
-
Step 1
Type “`bash or “`json in the first line.
-
Step 2
In the second line, type enter your message between two quotation marks (“Your message”).
-
Step 3
Enter another line and end the code block by typing “`.
Your chat box and sent message should look like these:
How to Write in Light Green Text on Discord
If you prefer a lighter shade of green, you will need to use css highlighting again. If you recall, this is also used to make your text red. The difference here is that for light green, you will use quotation marks instead of dash. Try this to check it out:
-
Step 1
Type “`css in the first line of the code block.
-
Step 2
Enter a new line, then type your message between two quotation marks (“Your message”).
-
Step 3
End the code block by typing “` in a new line.
When you’re done, your will look like this:
How to Write in Blue Text on Discord
There are two ways you can make your text blue on Discord. One is to use the css syntax while the other one requires the ini syntax.
For the ini syntax:
-
Step 1
Type “`ini in the first line.
-
Step 2
In the second line, put your message between two brackets ([]).
-
Step 3
In the third line, close the code block with “`.
The blue highlighted text will appear like this:
To use the css highlighting language:
-
Step 1
Type “`css in the first line.
-
Step 2
In the next line, type a dot or period (.) immediately followed by the message you want to color blue. Take note, you can’t use spaces using this syntax, but you can use the underscore symbol (_) to replace them and to separate words.
-
Step 3
End the code block with “`.
The colored text in Discord should look like this:
