How to Turn Off Discord Automatic Startup on the Discord App
You can easily stop Discord from opening through the app itself. There’s a handy, built-in feature that lets you do so. Here’s how:
-
Step 1
On the Discord app, go to User Settings.
User settings can be found by clicking the cogwheel or gear icon near your username. It’s right next to the Mute and Deafen button.
-
Step 2
Select Windows Settings under the App Settings section on the left sidebar.
-
Step 3
Toggle off Open Discord to stop it from running every time you log in to your device.
Below this option, there are also two other Discord settings that you might want to check out. These are “Start Minimised” and “Minimise to Tray”. Let me explain how each works below.
- Start Minimised – By enabling this setting, Discord will still run in the background but it won’t pop up as usual. You can only configure these settings if the above “Open Discord” option is enabled.
- Minimize to Tray – With this setting enabled, Discord will remain on your tray after you close it.
How to Turn Off Startup In Windows Settings
There’s another way you can disable Discord running on startup, and it’s by going to your PC’s Task Manager. Sometimes, even turning it off from the app’s User Settings won’t stop Discord from opening. Whether it’s a glitch on the app or a system error you can’t figure out, the simplest thing you can do is override it by configuring Discord on your computer’s settings itself.
Before going through this method, make sure you have been granted administrator permission on the PC. If not, you can ask the owner to give you administrator permission so you can access and configure the apps on the computer.
To do this, follow these steps:
-
Step 1
Open Task Manager by typing it on the search bar or pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC altogether.
Alternatively, you can also press CTRL+ALT+Delete, then choose Task Manager among the list of options.
Another way you can access Task Manager is by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting it on the menu that will appear.
-
Step 2
Go to the Startup tab.
-
Step 3
Find Discord among the apps listed under that tab.
-
Step 4
Right-click on it, and then choose Disable on the menu.
You can also find a Disable button on the bottom right corner of the Task Manager window.
Why Does Discord Open On Startup?
As I’ve mentioned before, Discord automatically opens on startup unless you change it in the settings. Upon downloading the Discord app on the desktop, this becomes the default system startup behavior. You have to manually adjust it in the system settings of your PC or configure it on the app’s built-in options to stop Discord from opening upon login.
What to do when Discord opens on startup even when disabled
So you’ve done either of the two methods above to stop Discord from running, however, it still does. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work due to random glitches on the Discord application. However, there are still a couple of fixes you can try.
One way to fix it is to go through both methods by enabling it on the app’s Windows Settings and then disabling it on the Task Manager. In other words, instead of turning it off in the User Settings, you enable it first so you can see the Discord icon listed in the Windows Task Manager.
However, if that option still doesn’t work, you might want to try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. As you already know, Discord will still run on startup, so you have to disable it manually again either by going to the app’s user settings or through the Task Manager.
