How to Send a Discord DM on Mobile
Just like the desktop app, mobile Discord offers numerous options for private messaging for both your Android and iOS device.
-
STEP 1
Open Discord and tap the message icon in the top left corner. This will open your previous DMs
-
STEP 2
Tap the username of the person you’d like to DM
-
STEP 3
Type your message and then press enter
You can also direct message users that you share the same servers with (we’ll discuss this further below, the processes are basically the same).
How to DM Someone You Don’t Know on Discord
If you want to message other users outside of your friends list, you also have numerous options.
Left Click
-
STEP 1
In a mutual server (you and the user are on the same server) left click on their name either in the chat or in the server member list
-
STEP 2
After clicking the user a box will appear. At the bottom, type in your private message into the text box
-
STEP 3
Press enter once you’ve finished your message (the box will disappear, confirming it has been sent)
On mobile, you can accomplish this by tapping the user’s profile and then tapping the message icon.
Right Click
-
STEP 1
From the same server right-click the person’s username who you wish to message. A dropdown menu will open, click a profile
-
STEP 2
The window that opens will give you a rundown of the user (mutual servers, mutual friends, social media accounts, and more). If the user’s privacy settings allow it, you will see a green “Send Message” button. Click this button
-
STEP 3
Any previous chat will open from the previous window. Type in your message and hit enter
Friend Request
Some users don’t allow private messages if you are not friends. It will take a few extra steps to start a chat with them.
-
STEP 1
From the directions above you’ll follow the same steps to open the user’s profile. Where “Send Message” was the last time, you will now see “Send Friend Request”. Hit that button to send an invite link
-
STEP 2
You will not be able to message them until the friend request has been accepted
User Settings
For safety’s sake, let’s take a look at some user settings and see what safety settings you have available through the Discord app.
DM settings can be found under privacy & safety > user settings
Safe Direct Messaging
This will automatically scan any direct messaging you receive. Depending on your settings, Discord will wipe a direct message if it detects any explicit content. If you have raunchy friends “My friends are nice” (the default setting) is a good option for you. If you’re worried about explicit content, “Keep me safe” is for you. If you love braving the unknown depths of the web, take a chance with “Do not scan.”
Server Privacy Defaults
Allowing direct messages from server members opens you to receive messages from anyone you share a server with (since activating this setting).
Who Can Add You as a Friend
If you don’t want to open yourself to random friend requests these would be the settings to play around with. If you turn off everyone only members of mutual servers and friends of friends will be able to send you requests.
All the Data
This is the granddaddy of settings here. These ticks determine if Discord can use your data. Some of them help cater to your Discord experience based on who you communicate with and what you play while using the app. If you’re not comfortable sharing your data, untick these.
How to Make a Discord Group Chat
Why DM when you could make a group chat? Just like direct messages, there are multiple ways to start up a group conversation.
-
STEP 1
From the home menu click “+/Create DM” next to “Direct Messages”
-
STEP 2
In the new box select the friend you want in the private check and click “Create Group DM”
-
STEP 3
In the new chat, type the message you want to send and hit enter
The process is identical to the mobile version of the Discord app.
-
STEP 1
Tap the icon in the top left corner of the app and then the “Create DM” at the top right
-
STEP 2
Tap the users you want to add to the chat
-
STEP 3
Type your message and hit enter
How to Remove Someone From Group Chat
Removing users from a chat can be done in less than five seconds.
-
STEP 1
Look at the members of the chat in the member list. Right-click the icon of the user you want to remove
-

Again, the process on mobile is practically identical.
