For example, if you’re a YouTuber and started a server to build a community for your followers, you can ask them questions like what kind of videos do they want to see next, did they love your recent upload, or did they not. You can also make a poll question about certain topics and you can create content on whichever gets the highest votes.
There are many reasons you should consider starting a poll on your server. Whereas there are built-in poll maker tools in other sites such as Facebook and Twitter, with Discord, it’s a bit different. You can start a poll on Discord itself, use a bot, or utilize a third-party website to host your poll.
Below are some ways on how you can organize a poll on your server. Let’s get started.
How to Make a Discord Poll Using Emote Reacts
You can create polls on Disord itself without using third-party tools to do it. Simply type in your question on the text box, add in a few choices, and hit send. People within your server can give emote reactions or emojis to your question as a way to answer.
As an example, you can post this question and send it to one of the channels on the server:
What is the best food in the world?
Add the choices below your question. Don’t forget to add them because without a set of options, people will just answer anything they like, which can mess up your poll. For the question above, let’s say your choices are the following:
- :bagel: Bagels
- :pancakes: Pancakes
- :pizza: Pizza
- :sandwich: Sandwiches
- :taco: Tacos
Adding :emoji here: besides the choices will make it easier for people to cast their votes. When typing enter on Discord’s text box, keep in mind that it will send your message instead. If you want to add a new line, press Shift + Enter every time you put in a new one in your list of choices.
Once you’ve written your question and choices, you can hit send. Add emote reacts to your post so people can just click on the choice they want.
You can add an emoji by hovering your mouse over your post and clicking the smiley face icon. If you’re using mobile, you can do that by long-pressing the post and clicking the same icon.
Here’s a sample reaction poll made on Discord by just using the text box:
There you go! You’ve just created a poll for everyone to see.
However, there are downsides to writing and posting polls directly on the text box.
One, you can’t vote anonymously because people can see whoever voted on something just by hovering their mouse directly over the emoji at the bottom. Two, it won’t be possible to gauge demographics or other kinds of analytics through this method since there will be no report available to you once your poll is created. And three, people can be trolls and add irrelevant emojis to the question, which can ruin your survey.
In this case, you can try posting the poll on a separate channel.
How to Create a Poll Channel on Your Discord Server
You can avoid people adding in random emojis by creating a separate channel just for polls. Sure, you can avoid people adding random emojis to a poll by disabling the Add reactions settings on your server, but that will take the fun out of everything. People won’t be able to add reactions to other types of messages which are not polls. Furthermore, they can only react using existing emojis in the message.
To solve that problem, you can create a channel on your server where you can disable adding new reactions from members. Follow the steps below to add a “poll channel” on the server. Note that you can only do this if you have permission from the server owner or if you own the server yourself.
-
Step 1
Open Discord on your mobile device or PC. To make things easier, you can download their app directly to your computer or phone. Log in to your account.
-
Step 2
Go to the server you want to create a poll channel on.
-
Step 3
You are going to create a text channel for this one. On the left-hand side of your server, you can find the list of all the channels in the server. On the right of the Text channels, you can find a plus icon that allows you to create a new channel. Click it.
-
Step 4
Discord will ask you to name your new channel. For this one, let’s just use #polls, and then make sure the Text channel is selected. Click Create channel.
-
Step 5
Your new poll channel has been created. To disable people from just adding random emojis to the polls you post, simply click the cogwheel icon to manage the channel settings.
-
Step 6
Go to Permissions.
-
Step 7
Scroll down and find the Add reactions settings under Text Channel Permissions. Click “x” to disallow members from adding new emojis to the multiple reaction poll you’ve posted. Make sure to save changes.
You can use this channel solely for posting reactions and stroll polls. People won’t be able to add emojis randomly and will only be able to click on the ones you’ve posted. Creating a new Discord channel that is only for polls and surveys will allow you to view all of your polls and surveys in one place. People can also easily find the poll without reading through all the other messages in different channels.
Best Discord Poll Bots
Another great way to post surveys is by using a poll bot. Using bots will make it easier for you to post a poll question and add in choices. Before you decide to use a poll bot on Discord, note that you must have permission from the owner to invite bots to the server. If you own that server, no worries, you automatically have permission to add any bot you like. If not, you can ask the server owner to give you permission.
To find and invite bots to your server, go to websites that list discord bots you can use. Top.gg is one of the best places where you can easily get a Discord bot. Here are three of the best Discord bots on the site:
To make a poll bot work, you must first invite it to your server. To invite a bot to a server, do the following:
-
Step 1
Choose a poll bot you want to add to Discord and open its page on Top.gg. For this guide, let’s use Simple Poll as an example.
-
Step 2
Click the Invite button. It will redirect you to the authorization page.
-
Step 3
Select the server you want to add the poll bot to and then click continue.
-
Step 4
Authorize the bot to get access to your account. You can see the list of permissions you’re giving the bot on this page so you know what it will do for your server.
-
Step 5
Check the Captcha authorization. Once you’ve done this, the bot will be added to your server.
How to Use a Discord Poll Bot
Now that you’ve added a poll bot to your server, you can now post surveys using it. Each poll bot can have a different command. Here’s how to make a poll on Discord using the bots mentioned above:
Simple Poll
To use this poll bot, all you have to do is type in /poll “Your Question” “Option 1” “Option 2” “Option 3.” Type in the question first, and then press Tab to enter.
The bot will ask you to put in choices for your poll. With Simple Poll, you can add up to 20 options. Write down all the choices you want to include in the survey. You can also add emojis to help others know how to cast their vote.
Press Enter and the bot will automatically post your poll along with the emojis so you won’t have to manually search and add them:
You can also do this for Yes/No polls:
Poll Bot
With Poll Bot, it’s a bit different. You can post simple yes or no polls as well as reaction and straw polls. You can use the following commands below when making polls in your server’s text box:
- To make a reaction poll type +poll question here and Poll Bot will react with π, π, and π€·β
- To make a multi reaction poll type +poll {title} [option 1] [option 2] [option 3]
- To make a Straw poll type +strawpoll {title} [option 1] [option 2] [option 3
For example, you ask the people on your server if pepperoni pizzas are delicious. They can either say yes, no or just shrug in the answers. Type in this question on the text box.
When you click enter, the Poll Bot will automatically include the reactions π, π, and π€·β so people can start voting.
You can also do the same thing with a multiple reaction poll and straw polls. Just type in the commands for each specific type of poll, add in the question, and include the options.
If you choose to create a straw poll, a link will be included in your post. People can click the link to cast their vote, and they will be redirected to a page like this:
With straw polls, you can also see a graph of the results:
EasyPoll
EasyPoll allows you to post different kinds of posts, including timed ones. Here’s a list of commands you can use to add various types of polls as well as how you can utilize its other features:
- /poll – Create a normal poll without time limit and with up to 20 own answers
- /timepoll – Create a timed poll, set an end date until when the poll will run. Use time specifications for this like 10m / 3h / 1d
- /closepoll – Close a poll so that no more votes are counted and display the final result
- /easypoll – Get a list and help with all commands
- /vote – Vote for the EasyPoll Bot
- /invite – Invite EasyPoll to your own Discord Server
- /info – Show some information about EasyPoll
- /ping – See the Ping of the Bot to the Discord Gateway
- /setup – language Change the Bot language of the current Guild
- /setup permissions – Check the required bot permissions on server and channel level
Let’s make a timed poll as an example. Type in the command /timepoll. And then, add a question and a set of options:
Hit enter:
It works similarly with the other poll bots in this list, except that you will be adding a time limit for your question. People won’t be able to vote anymore once the time is up.
EasyPoll also doesn’t let others add their own reaction. If people try to add another emoji that’s not on the list of options, the emoji will be automatically removed.
