The problem is, not everyone uses the same brand. And while Discord already has lots of features that are indeed very useful for its users, one of the setbacks most people wish they included is the ability to hear themselves while gaming or talking to their peers on Discord.
This is important because sometimes the microphone might be too loud or too soft, or there might be problems with their headsets or audio and it’s a little bit difficult to assess those things especially while in-game.
Hearing themselves would tell them if there’s too much noise in the background, the audio volume is too high, too low, or not working at all. That’s why Discord users prefer hearing themselves talking to better adjust their settings and control the audio while speaking.
How to Hear Yourself on the Desktop Discord App
-
STEP 1
On your computer, right-click on the speaker icon/volume icon found at the bottom right on the PC taskbar and open sound settings. For Windows 10/11:
-
Step 2
Select playback devices that correspond with your default devices, such as headphones or speakers. Then, select the ‘Recording’ tab and right-click on the recording device.
-
STEP 3
Under the ‘Recording tab’ select ‘Properties’
-
STEP 4
Click the ‘listen’ tab and make sure to enable ‘listen to this device’
-
STEP 5
Click ‘Apply’, then ‘Okay.’
After doing the steps above, you should be able to hear your own voice talk with a slight delay. To fix and adjust input volume, perform a mic test, and other audio settings for video and voice chatting on Discord such as poor audio quality and background noise, open the Discord app on your PC and follow the steps below:
-
STEP 1
Click on the gear icon on the bottom left of the Discord app, and it should direct you to the user settings.
-
STEP 2
Under the drop-down menu on the user settings, scroll down to ‘App Settings’ and select ‘Voice&Video’, and adjust the default setting.
-
STEP 3
Switch the input device from the default device to the headphones or headset you’re using. If you’re using an external or separate microphone, make sure to plug it in.
-
STEP 4
Switch the output device from the default device to the one you’re using.
-
STEP 5
Check and adjust the input device and output device’s volume and adjust them accordingly.
-
STEP 6
To check the input device’s sound quality (microphone), perform a mic test using the ‘Let’s check’ icon, and again, adjust your input and output volume accordingly.
Note that you will hear a slight delay in your own voice, but that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be.
-
STEP 7
From the same tab, scroll down to ‘Advanced’ and make sure to enable ‘Noise Suppression.’
-
STEP 8
Still, scroll down under the ‘Advanced’ settings and enable ‘echo cancellation.’
-
STEP 9
You can change or modify ‘Attenuation’ depending on your preference if you want other applications to lower their volume when you or your friends talk so that your friends hear you and vice versa. Setting it to zero disables such a feature.
How to Hear Yourself on Discord Mobile
Unfortunately, there’s no feature to hear yourself on Discord mobile as the app automatically detects audio sensitivity on your phone. Hopefully, this will be an added feature on Discord mobile in the future.
