Computers are weird sometimes. Software doesn’t always do what it’s supposed to do and can result in an error message that you may not know how to fix.
If you run into issues during the Discord installation process, don’t worry because, in this article, we will cover some of the ways to deal with a Discord installation failed error message.
The Fix for the “Installation Has Failed” Error on Discord
It isn’t always clear what causes an installation to have a failed error, so we will cover some of the main ways to fix discord installation issues.
Discontinue the Discord Process
The simplest remedy to fix a discord installation with a failed error is to stop all Discord processes and start over.
To discontinue the Discord process:
-
step 1
Open the Task Manager by pressing the windows key + R.
-
step 2
Type “taskmgr” into the search field and hit OK.
-
step 3
Scroll through the Process tab to find Discord.
Select any Discord-related process in the Process tab and click End task. If there are multiple Discord processes, you may need to run this several times to finish the Discord task.
-
step 4
Click the End task button in the bottom right.
-
step 5
Repeat for any additional Discord processes currently running.
Delete Discord App Data
Discord software installed on your PC saves data pertaining to the program in a folder called AppData.
To fix any Discord installation issues, you will need to completely remove this data to prevent any further corruption with the Discord setup file.
To Delete Discord App data:
-
step 1
Start by pressing the windows key + R.
-
step 2
Type “%AppData%” into the run dialog box search field and hit OK.
-
step 3
In the window that comes up, scroll to find the Discord folder. Right-click the Discord folder and click delete.
-
step 4
Repeat this process with the Discord folder in “%LocalAppData%” and restart your computer.
You have removed all Discord files from your local and roaming folders in Windows and can now reinstall discord on your device.
Download the Discord setup file from Discord.com and start the installation process.
Launch Discord in Compatibility Mode
Sometimes an app can run into a compatibility issue with the current version of the OS (operating system) you are using.
To run Discord in compatibility mode for a different version of Windows:
-
step 1
Right-click on the Discord app icon on your desktop and select Properties from the list.
-
step 2
In the compatibilities tab, select the check box in Compatibility mode and choose the version of Windows you want to use.
-
step 3
Click Apply and then OK to save your new settings.
-
step 4
Launch Discord to see if the issue has been resolved.
Disable Antivirus Software
Sometimes third-party antivirus software can cause issues with installation.
If your Discord installation failed due to a problem with an antivirus, you would need to either disable your antivirus or whitelist Discord.
This process can be different for individual antivirus programs, so consult the developer for steps on how to do this for your software.
Update Device Drivers
Device drivers are files that talk to your OS, telling it how a piece of hardware should function. If these drivers are outdated, your PC may not know how to properly run the Discord application or install Discord files.
To update your device drivers:
-
step 1
Type device drivers into the Windows search bar.
-
step 2
Select Device Manager.
-
step 3
Right-click any device drivers you want to update from the list and select Update driver.
-
step 4
Click on Search automatically for drivers to find the latest drivers for that device.
-
step 5
Repeat this for any other drivers you want to update.
Install Discord in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is Windows’ most basic operating state. It uses minimal drivers and files to run your OS.
If Discord or the Discord installer function properly in Safe Mode, then the reason your Discord installation has failed has nothing to do with Windows default settings.
Windows updates are important for your OS to function properly.
To update your Windows OS:
-
step 1
Open Windows settings.
-
step 2
Select Update & Security.
-
step 3
Click on Windows Update and check for any updates at the top.
-
step 4
Windows will download and install any pending updates for your device.
What Causes the Discord “Installation Has Failed” Error
There may be a reason why your Discord installation failed.
Below are some of the most common problems you may encounter when installing Discord.
-
Discord Process Is Currently Running
You may receive a “Discord installation has failed” notification if your device is already running Discord.
Discord does not allow multiple instances of the Discord app to run simultaneously. Stop any Discord-related processes from fixing Discord installation problems.
-
Third-Party Interference
A third-party program such as an antivirus program can stop a Discord installation if the antivirus views Discord as a threat to your device.
This solution requires turning off your antivirus or adding Discord to your antivirus’s whitelist. Once you’ve done this, try and install Discord again.
-
Incompatibility With Windows OS Setting
If you try to install discord and get a Windows incompatibility notification, you may need to run Discord with compatibility with a different version of your OS.
-
Outdated Drivers
Sometimes our computer’s drivers will fail, causing an attempt to install discord to give us a failed error message.
Opening your device manager and updating any out-of-date drivers should help install and run the Discord app.
-
Corrupted Files
With any software, files can be corrupted due to any number of things. If this happens, you will need to remove the files by deleting them from the Discord folder and installing Discord again.
