What are Discord IDs?
Generally speaking, Discord ID is a unique string of numbers attached to:
- a user’s account, including yours
- individual messages
- servers
- channels
- …and even DMs, including private group messages
What’s the purpose of Discord ID?
There are many instances in which you are going to need a Discord ID. For example, you may need them in administrative tasks when you’re configuring your server’s settings or running one.
Another reason you might need a Discord ID is when a bot you invited to the server to help you manage the community (or make it more fun) will require it from you. To locate a user or message, for example, you have to give a unique ID so that the bot can locate it more accurately.
Your Discord ID is also needed when you’re planning to create a bot. Knowing where to find it in times of need can make things easier for you.
And perhaps one of the most important reasons why you need to know how to find Discord ID is that these are needed when you file a report. If a Discord user has violated Community guidelines, or worse, harass you, you will need to have them so the support team can easily locate the account as well as the messages.
Additionally, if you are considering to file a report against an entire server, you will need a bunch of evidence to back your complaint.
Usually, Discord IDs are 18 digits long. Of course, you won’t need to memorize them because Discord will allow you to copy them right away.

How to Find Your Discord ID
Your Discord user ID is a multi-number identifier that is connected to your account. Unlike your username which other people can also use, your Discord user ID is completely unique. Here’s how a username and a user ID will look like:
Username: MostAwesomePersonOnDiscord#1234
User ID: 987654321012345678
Now, say you need your User ID to access Discord Developer Portal to create a bot, you will be asked to provide a user ID.
Your whole username can usually be found on your Discord profile, while you can get your user ID in a different way. Here’s how.
-
Step 1
Open the Discord app on your desktop.
-
Step 2
Click the cogwheel or gear icon beside your username to access “User Settings”.
-
Step 3
On the “My Account” tab, click the horizontal three dots icon beside your username.
-
Step 4
On the pop-up menu, click “Copy ID”.
Alternatively, you can also search the member’s area of a server (the right side part of the screen) for your name and right-click on your profile picture. You will find “Copy ID” among the list of options. This also works on your profile icon in other places, like on the server channels and DMs.
If you’re using a mobile device, just long-press your profile icon. At the bottom of the menu that will appear, tap “Copy ID”.

Bonus: Direct Message ID
If you want to copy an ID of a conversation that happened via DM, you have to access Discord on any browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). You cannot do this on the desktop app since you need to access a URL for this.
-
Step 1
Open Discord on your browser, and make sure you’re logged in to the same account.
-
Step 2
Find the message on the DMs. This can work both for individual and group messages.
-
Step 3
Head over to the address bar, and copy the last 18 numbers on the URL. That’s the message ID.
