We have all had some contact with trolls, or even just plain poorly mannered people. You know the type, right? Way too edgy weirdos with a less-than-acceptable vocabulary? Well, we obviously DO NOT want these people in our communities, so a server owner can ban them from the server.
So, how do we make sure that annoying individual does not just make a new account and rejoin?
In this article we will cover what a server ban is, how Discord handles server bans, and ways a banned user can overcome a Discord ban.
Do Discord Bans Use an IP Address?
In general, someone who is prone to getting banned from a server will probably not take very kindly to that, and may try to get back into the server.
Luckily, Discord does use a user’s IP address when they are banned from a server. That particular IP address, as well as any other IP address that user has logged in from will be blocked from joining the server.
This means that even if the user creates a new account they will not be able to join the server they have been banned from if they log in from the same IP address.
An IP ban prevents users from logging into other accounts that have joined the server
All server bans are automatically IP based. When a user receives a ban from a Discord server, the admins do not have to do anything special to ensure the IP address is banned.
Who Can Ban Users in a Discord Server?
Not everyone in a server has the ability to dish out Discord IP bans. Only the owner of the server can ban people, as well as anyone the owner gives permission to.
In some cases, Discord bots can be used to issue a temporary ban. These temporary bans may result in a permanent ban if you’ve been previously banned.
What Happens to a Banned User’s Discord Chat Messages?
Any messages a banned account has posted will be deleted based on the preference chosen at the time of ban.
The Delete Message History section has a drop-down list where the server owner can choose anywhere from 1 hour to 7 days’ worth of chat history of the banned account to be deleted.
This allows for any harmful messages that have been sent from the banned user’s account to be removed when an admin or server owner bans someone.
Can an IP Ban From a Discord Server be Removed?
A Discord IP Ban, while blocking a user’s account from joining the server again, is not necessarily a permanent ban.
If the user can appeal to the server admin team, a Discord server ban can be overturned and the user will be able to join the server once again.
How to Get a Ban Removed
Since your Discord account can no longer post in the server you were banned from, the only way to get a ban reversed is to reach out directly to the owner or admins of the server.
However, you cannot message users you do not share a server with, or are not on your friend list.
To add a user to your friend list, you will need to send them a friend request using their Discord user ID. This is to stop unwanted friend requests for the safety of Discord’s users.
How to Bypass IP bans on Discord
Attemptingban evasionon a server is against TOS and your Discord account will be permanently banned. In some cases, depending on severity, you may be susceptible to account deletion.
This means you will lose access to all Discord servers and friends. This account termination can also apply to future accounts you create.
However, getting around an IP ban on Discord is relatively easy.
You will need install Discord on a new device at a new location. This will give you a new IP address.
Then launch Discord, create a new account, and log in.
When launching Discord with your other account from the new address, you will be able to join the server you have been banned from.
There are also ways to spoof mac addresses or other tactics using a VPN to obtain new IP addresses to circumvent IP bans on your new account.
