The main purpose of the Discord app is to connect people together across the globe. Adding friends is how peers and colleagues can bond over Discord.
How to add someone on Discord? There are multiple ways of doing that. In this article, we will run you through how to do these and successfully add friends on Discord using your desktop app version of Discord, or the mobile app version using your Android and Apple devices.
You can follow these steps as we go forward with the tutorial. Let’s start!
How to Add Friends on Discord Via Desktop App
Discord offers both desktop and mobile clients. While some people prefer one version over the other, most users get both the desktop version and the Discord mobile app, especially since a phone is more portable than a desktop or laptop.
It doesn’t matter which version you use. You can still add friends on Discord and we will show you how through a series of steps. For the Discord on desktop, here’s how:
Adding friends directly
-
STEP 1
Launch Discord and click on the Discord home icon in the top left corner.
-
STEP 2
Click on “Friends” and select the “Add Friend” icon.
-
STEP 3
Type the username as well as your friend’s Discord tag (the 4-digit number which is the user tag), and select “Send Friend Request” button.
Send friend request was successful!
If and when your friend request is accepted, your friend will appear on your Friends list.
Adding friends from a Discord server
You can add someone on Discord through a common Discord server you both are in. Here’s how to add a friend on the same server:
-
STEP 1
Click the server you and your peer/friend are both in, on the left-side corner of Discord.
-
STEP 2
Click on your friend from the server member list. Whether your friend is online or offline, you can still send them a friend request.
Click on the profile image and you will be directed to your friend’s profile preview.
-
STEP 3
Click on “Send Friend Request” from the pop-up menu.
And you’re done! Just wait for your friend request to be accepted.
How to Add Discord Friends on Mobile
Since we’ve already covered the how-to’s for the desktop version, now, we will tackle how to add someone on Discord using the mobile app version of Discord.
Adding friends directly
iPhone, iPad, and Android version has the same steps to follow. For this tutorial, I will use an Android phone.
-
STEP 1
Launch the Discord mobile app and tap on “Friends” list icon from the bottom menu.
-
STEP 2
Tap the add friend icon in the upper right corner.
-
STEP 3
Type the username and the user tag of your friend on the box provided.
-
STEP 4
Press “Send Friend Request” button.
Awesome! Your friend request is successfully sent.
Adding friends from a Discord server
Here’s how you can add friends on Discord from the server you are both in, using the Discord mobile app:
-
STEP 1
Tap on the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner to see the servers you are in. Select the server you and your friend are in.
-
STEP 2
Tap on the server member list icon in the top right corner.
-
STEP 3
Find your friend from the server member list and tap on their profile.
-
STEP 4
Tap on “Add Friend”.
You have successfully sent a friend request. You can now wait for the pending friend requests.
How to Find Friends on Discord
If your friend is not on any of the servers you’re in, you should message your friend if you are connected on other social media platforms and ask about their username on Discord as well as their Discord tag. You can then proceed to the steps instructed above.
If your friend is nearby, you can turn on the nearby scan option feature from your Discord mobile app. Discord will scan and show your friend’s Discord username by turning your location on. You can then proceed to add them.
